Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Indian space agency, founded in 1969 to develop an independent Indian space program. Its headquarters are in Bangalore (Bengaluru). ISRO’s chief executive is a chairman, who is also chairman of the Indian government’s Space Commission and the secretary of the Department of Space.
The Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established by Jawaharlal Nehru under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in 1962, on the urging of scientist Vikram Sarabhai recognising the need in space research. INCOSPAR grew and became ISRO in 1969, within DAE. In 1972, the Government of India had set up a Space Commission and the Department of Space (DOS), bringing ISRO under the DOS. The establishment of ISRO thus institutionalised space research activities in India. It since then has been managed by the DOS, which governs various other institutions in India in domain of astronomy and space technology.
ISRO built India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, which was launched by the Soviet Union on 19 April 1975.
ISRO has the world’s largest constellation of remote-sensing satellites and operates the two satellite navigation systems GAGAN and NAVIC. It has sent two missions to the Moon and one to Mars.

Important Upcoming Space Missions of ISRO (2022-23) :
RISAT-1A- Launched on 14 February 2022, RISAT-1A is a Radar imaging satellite. Its configuration is similar to RISAT-1. It is a land-based mission with primary application in terrain mapping and analysis of the land area, ocean and water surface for soil moisture.
Gaganyaan 1- Expected to launch in the month of June this year, Gaganyaan-1 is an uncrewed spacecraft flight test. The spacecraft is being designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with rendezvous and docking capability. This will be the first of two flight tests prior to the inaugural crewed mission.
Aditya-L1- It will be launched in 2022. Aditya-L-1 is a solar observation. Aditya-L1 is the first Indian observatory class mission to study the solar corona using a solar coronagraph and also chromosphere using near UV instrument. X-ray spectroscopic instrument will provide flare spectra while in-situ payload observe the solar events during their passage from Sun to Earth.
Chandrayaan-3- Expected to launch in August 2022, it is a Lunar lander, rover. Mission repeat of Chandrayaan-2 with lander, rover and a propulsion module to attempt a soft landing of the lunar surface.
Gaganyaan 2- Expected to launch in 2022-23, it is a second of two flight tests prior to the inaugural crewed mission.
NISAR- To be launched in 2023, NISAR is a SAR satellite. NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) is a joint project between NASA and ISRO to co-develop and launch a dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar satellite to be used for remote sensing. Itwill use the first dual-band radar imaging satellite.
Gaganyaan 3- Expected to launch is 2023, it will be the first crewed Gaganyan mission.
