The freedom movement of India is a defining moment in country’s history. It’s a series of historic  events  and sacrifices by many freedom fighters. People from Assam also activity involved in country’s freedom movement. The visit  of Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 to Assam had a great impact among the mindset of assamese masses. Kushal Konwar, Kanaklata Boruah, Bhugeswari Phukanani, Chandraprabha Saikiani, Pushpalata Das  are some prominent assamese freedom fighters. They are celebrated among the whole community. But there are some others who also played an  important role in the freedom movement of India whose names still remain  unknown to the common masses .The  proposed study explores some unsung heroes of freedom movement from Assam whose contributions are away from  the spotlights.

Objective : 

This article deals with the unknown heroes of India’s freedom movement from Assam. The study aims to through light on some unsung heroes and their contributions towards country’s independence.

The main aims are to highlight some unknown freedom fighters from various parts of Assam reappraising some heroes and their contributions which has not written in common text books. Overall, it aims to anyalse some unsung heroes whose name faded into darkness.

Methodology :

This article is based on analytical method. This analysis basically concentrate on some unsung heroes who contributed a lot in country’s freedom movement. Both Primary and secondary  sources are used in this   article. As a primary sources personal interviews has been taken from the family members of some unsung hereoes. Some secondary sources such as books, Journals, article are also used in this article.

Results and Discussion : 

There is no doubt that every masses of Assam and some parts of India hear about the contributions of Kanaklata Boruah, Bhugeswari Phukanani, Chandraprabha Saikia, Pushpalata Das and many more. They have got the spotlights. But there are some other freedom fighters whose contributions remain unknown to the masses today.

Here some lesser-known freedom fighters of India from Assam ::

Sonaram Chutia : 

Sonaram Chutia has played an active role in Quit India movement. He was arrested by the British and sent to Jorhat central Jail for participating in Quit India movement in 1942. In the time of his imprisonment he met some prominent freedom fighter such as Debeswar Sarma, Gopinath Bordoloi, Pitambar Dev Goswami, Fakhruddin  Ali Ahmed etc. He had been imprisoned for 2 years 18 days. After his released in 1944 he was again   placed for 6 months of house arrest. In 1972 Union Government and in 1973 Assam Government honoured him for his contribution as a freedom fighter.

Debeswar Doloi : 

Debeswar Doloi was a freedom fighter from Jorhat district. He was founder-President of Assam Rajyik Mukti Joddha Sanmilan. Under the Asom Rajyik Mukti Joddha Sanmilan Doloi tried to create freedom fighters association  units in every  district of Assam. Doloi was a followes of Gandhi. He participated in quit India movement when he was a student  and imprisoned for seven  mother in Jorhat jail. He met Hair Narayan Baruah. Nilamoni Phukan, Krishna Nath Sarmah, Sonaram Chutia and some others freedom fighters in Jorhat Central Jail. “Freedom movement in Assam” is the coedited book of Debeswar Dobi and Tileswar Bordoloi is the another author of this book.

Bholanath Baruah : 

Bholanath Boruah is another freedom fighter from Panigaon, Lakhimpur, Assam. He was born in 1925 at Panigaon. Leading the co-freedom fighter and   volunteers of Lakhimpur, he took part in Quit India movement. As a prominent freedom fighter, Baruah was honoured by the President of India in 2014.

Bidyawati Gogoi : 

Bidyawati Gogoi is a freedom fighter and social activist from Lakhimpur. She was born  at Dhakuakhana, Lakhimpur in 1926. She joined in the Quit India movement and dared to raised slogans like “ Up UP National Flag, Down down England Jack” “Mahatma Gandhi Ki Jay “, “ Bharat Mata  Ki Jay” etc. She played an active role to communicate and convinced the women of Dhakuakhana to participate in India’s independence movement.

Chakradhar Bhuyan :

Chakradhar Bhuyan  is an  another freedom fighter from Lakhimpur district. Bhuyan  was born at Panigaon, Lakhimpur on August,9, 1929. By following the path of Mahatma Gandhi Bhuyan joined in the Quit India movement in 1942. Bhuyan  was given the responsibility  of a  spy to collect the confidential information of British at the time of freedom  movement.

Biju Bauri : 

Biju Bauri was a freedom fighter who lost his life in  prison following torture by the Bristish  Jail Staff. According to Devabrata Sharma, secretary of Assam Jatiya Prakash “While sacrifices of other heroes like him have been extolled in history, Bauri remains an unsung hero”.

Biju Bauri also known as Beja Baisnab. He was a tea worker near Numaligarh. He got influenced by the speeches of other freedom fighter against Bristish Raj. He was arrested and sent to Jorhat Jail for picketing and participating in non violent demonstration on February 19, 1932. Because of the torture of British Jail staff he lost his life in Jail. Not only Bauri but his whole family also joined in  the freedom movement and got imprisoned.

Bipin Pal Das : 

Bipin pal Das was an another freedom fighter whose name is also far from the limelight. He  joined in Quit India movement and played a vital role on spreading the message   of freedom movement among the rural masses in Kamrup district. He was arrested in 1942 because of this campaign .After being released from jail he took part in some underground works.

Das joined the congress socialist party in 1946 . Apart from these freedom fighters, there are some other also. They are  such as Akan Chandra Borah, Kushadev Gaswami, Kerketuwa Chutia, Keshav Ram Borah, Khargeswar hazarika, Kamal Chandra kataki, Krishna Prasad Dutta, Khageswar Gogoi, Kamal Chandra Bhagawati, Haladhar Bhuyan, Motiram Borah and many more. They took part in country’s freedom movement. Some of them got imprisoned for their participation in freedom struggle. They also contributed a lot for their motherland. Their contributions towards Indian’s freedom struggle can-not be ignored.

Narayan Chandra Dutta : 

Born in 1910, Narayan Chandra Dutta had the spirit of freedom since his childhood and fought for India’s independence from British colonial rule. During his school days, Dutta participated in the Horse Race Competition at the Gymkhana Club in Jorhat, Assam against British officials. He was a student at Jorhat Christial School.

Narayan Chandra Dutta was put in charge of Barkathoni Satyagraha Ashram in Golaghat, which was founded after Mahatma Gandhi began the Civil Disobedience Movement. Bapu began his defiant march to the sea to break the British monopoly on salt on 12th March,1930 Dutta arranged for food, health and wellness, treatment, training and movement of the satyagrahis of the Barkathoni Ashram.

The Barkatoni Satyagraha Ashram, among few others in Golaghat, was established by satyagrahi Sankar Chandra Barua for the propagation of truth and non violence among the satyagrahis. The ashram’s aim was also to propagate the Civil Disobedience Movement and the swadeshi concept of spinning thread out of cotton.

Barua’s growing swadeshi activities came to the notice of the British administration. Soon after, the British government announced an award to anyone for the severed head of Sankar Barua and any freedom fighter supporting him was considered the enemy of the British administration.

The British spies were at work to trace out satyagrahis of the Quit India Movement. Despite the announcements of the British administration against Barua, Narayan Chandra Dutta sheltered him in his house in order to keep alive the India’s struggle for freedom in Golaghat.

The British police, on several occasions, entered Dutta’s house in search of Sankar Chandra Barua and also tortured and ill-treated him by inflicting punishments. Anticipating further threats, Dutta had kept secret documents of the Freedom Movement beneath the roots of bamboo plantations in his yard. He had also organised secret camps for the volunteers of the freedom struggle on the bank of Doiyang river in Assam during the Quit India Movement.

Dutta openly resisted the selling of opium among the locals by the British, for which he faced atrocities of the British police. The fearless satyagrahi was beaten and even arrested. During the outbreak of Kala-Azar at Golaghat in 1945-46, Dutta played a pivotal role in the society arranging for the treatment and care of the patients of Furkating, Rupkolia Gaon and Ulutoli Gaon in Assam. 

Narayan Chandra Dutta dedicated his life not only to the freedom struggle but also dedicated his life for educational and cultural promotion of the locality of Golaghat region in Assam.

Conclusion : 

In the light of the above discussion, it can be  concluded that people from various region came together to fight for their motherland. Though they contributed a lot for their motherland. But they are away from the limelight. During the period of supression the women also actively involved in every phases of freedom movement. They took part in the processions, picketing, Gandhi’s programmes like weaving, spinning and many more.

Some women  played an important role to propagate the message of  struggle in some remote areas. Bidyawati Gogoi is the perfect example for it. However, not much has been written about them. It’s the time to celebrate  those unsung heroes whose contributions are  unforgettable.
