1. Nagastra, a UAV-based system, operates as an aerial ambush. It’s called loitering munition because of its ability to hover above the target. It can fly at altitudes of over 4,500 meters, making it invisible to radar. It attacks in kamikaze mode, destroying both the target and itself. In addition to day-and-night surveillance cameras, the Loiter Munition is outfitted with a warhead capable of defeating soft skin targets. If the target is not detected or the mission is aborted, it can be returned for a soft landing with a parachute. Nagastra-l is the first indigenous weapon of its kind, capable of hovering in the air and striking when the target approaches.

2. Puja Tomar, an Indian strawweight, became the first Indian to win a UFC bout, defeating Brazilian Rayanne Amanda dos Santos via split decision at UFC Louisville.Puja Tomar defeated Rayanne Amanda dos Santos 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.

3. The central government assigns ‘special category status’ to regions or states in order to provide special assistance in the form of tax breaks and financial support for regional development. It was first introduced in 1969, following the Fifth Finance Commission’s recommendations. 

Assam, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, and Telangana, have received special category status.

4. In Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, GAIL (India) intends to construct a 1500 KTA Ethane Cracker Project, with an estimated capital expenditure of Rs 60,000 crore. In addition to strengthening the petrochemical infrastructure in the area, the project intends to produce a variety of ethylene derivatives.

5. The French (CNES) and Indian (ISRO) space agencies are working together to lead the high-resolution thermal infrared future mission TRISHNA, which is scheduled to launch in 2025. 6. At age 36, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, the MP for Srikakulam, became the youngest member of the Central Cabinet ever. He belongs to the Telugu Desam Party. He is the son of former Union minister, K. Yerran Naidu.

7. There will be 74 female MPs in the 18th Lok Sabha, which is a small drop from the 78 female MPs elected in 2019. Women’s representation in the new Lok Sabha will be 13.6%, as compared to 14.3% in the previous session. India’s percentage of women in the Lok Sabha is lower than that of a number of other nations; the US, UK, and South Africa have higher percentages.

8. Two Indian cities were recently added to the Creative Cities Network by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). They are Gwalior, in Madhya Pradesh, in the category of “City of Music,” and Kozhikode, in Kerala, in “City of Literature.” 

UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network was created in 2004. Crafts and folk arts, media arts, film, design, gastronomy, literature, and music are the seven creative fields that the network covers.

9. Kerala has initiated a groundbreaking initiative to modernize education by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its textbooks. This is a significant step forward. Plans to include AI learning modules in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) curriculum for students in Class 7 have been revealed by the state. In the upcoming academic year, over 4 lakh students in Kerala will have the chance to explore the field of artificial intelligence (AI), as per a press release from Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE).




10. About 100 tonnes of gold have been moved from the United Kingdom to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Indian vaults. This is India’s first attempt to transfer this magnitude of gold reserves since 1991. About one-third of the RBI’s gold reserves are kept domestically, with the remaining half being held in safe custody with the Bank of International Settlements and the Bank of England abroad. The RBI anticipates saving money by making this move instead of paying the Bank of England’s storage costs. 

According to the annual data released by the RBI, as of March 31, 2024, the central bank had 822.10 tonnes of gold in its foreign exchange reserves, up from 794.63 tonnes held at the same time the previous year.

11. Genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes were released in Djibouti, East Africa, to combat malaria. The release took place in Ambouli, a suburb of Djibouti City, as part of a pilot project involving Oxitec Ltd, the Djibouti government, and Association Mutualis, a non-governmental organization. The release is part of the ‘Djibouti Friendly Mosquito Programme’, which began two years ago to combat the spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species. The method targets female mosquitos, who are primarily responsible for malaria transmission.

12. Major Radhika Sen, an Indian woman peacekeeper who served with the UN mission in Congo, has won the prestigious military gender advocate award on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. She was the Commander of MONUSCO’s engagement platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion (INDRDB) from March 2023 to April 2024.

13. The 77th Cannes Film Festival saw a historic achievement for Indian cinema when Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ won the prestigious Grand Prix award, the festival’s second-highest honor. This victory is historic, as Kapadia became the first Indian filmmaker to receive this prestigious award.

14. India has ascended to the 39th position in the latest World Economic Forum’s “Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024,” reflecting a significant improvement in travel conditions post-pandemic. The United States leads the rankings, with India emerging as the top performer in South Asia and among lower-middle-income nations.

The top four countries in the 2024 list are Spain, Japan, France, and Australia, respectively. Compiled in collaboration with the UK-based University of Surrey, the index highlights India’s strengths in several areas: high price competitiveness, robust air transport infrastructure, and solid ground and port infrastructure.

15. Gopichand Thotakura has made history as the first Indian tourist to journey into space on a commercial flight operated by Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin. He is an Indian-origin entrepreneur and pilot. He is one of the six crew members on the Blue Origin New Shepard-25 mission.

16. Nalanda University was one of the most renowned centers of learning in ancient India, located in present-day Bihar. It was founded in the 5th century CE during the Gupta Empire and continued to flourish for several centuries. Nalanda was not just a university but a vibrant intellectual hub, attracting scholars from all over the world, including China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and South East Asia.

17. The Mirage 2000 is a French multirole fighter aircraft developed by Dassault Aviation. It has been in service with several air forces around the world, including the Indian Air Force (IAF). India operates the Mirage 2000H and Mirage 2000I variants.

20. In a historic event, the Shompen tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands took part in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the first time ever. Seven members of the Shompen community exercised their right to vote, marking a significant moment for one of India’s least studied Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Residing in the dense tropical rainforests of Great Nicobar Island, the Shompen people form a distinct tribal community and live in relative isolation from mainstream processes, avoiding contact with settlers and ex-servicemen on the island. With their own language and no formal education system, it’s unclear to what extent they comprehend or engage in political processes.

Out of a total of 84 eligible Shompen voters, seven participated in the electoral process at the Shopem Hut polling station. Assistance from the Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS) staff facilitated communication with the tribal members. Additionally, other PVTGs in the region also took part in the elections. At Dugong Creek, 63 out of 68 eligible Onge tribe members cast their votes, while at Strait Island, 33 out of 39 eligible Great Andamanese tribe members exercised their franchise.

21. The government introduced a platform called CDP-SURAKSHA to provide horticultural farmers with subsidies under the Cluster Development Programme (CDP). The CDP-SURAKSHA is a digital platform. “System for Unified Resource Allocation, Knowledge, and Secure Horticulture Assistance” is what SURAKSHA stands for. 

It will enable farmers to receive subsidies instantly in their bank accounts through the use of the National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) e-RUPI voucher. Features of the CDP-SURAKSHA include database integration with PM-KISAN.

22. Tejas is India’s indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA), developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It’s designed to meet the requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy.

23. The Indian Army has received the first batch of Igla-S Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) from Russia. These systems improve the Army’s capabilities for Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD), especially in the northern border’s high mountainous terrain. One regiment has already begun using the systems, which are part of the procurement that includes local manufacturing in India. This acquisition is in line with plans for future indigenous VSHORAD advancements and replaces outmoded Igla-1M systems.

24. TSAT-1A, India’s first privately built sub-meter resolution earth observation satellite, was successfully launched by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and Satellogic.

(Smart AI Resource Assistant for Health), a prototype digital health promoter driven by generative artificial intelligence (AI). S.A.R.A.H. informs users on a range of health-related topics in eight different languages, including mental health, major health issues like cancer and heart disease, and healthy habits.

A.R.A.H., assisted by Soul Machines Biological AI, uses generative AI to provide precise real-time responses and sympathetic interactions.
