The Charaideo Maidams, represents the late medieval (13th-19th century CE) mound burial tradition of the Tai Ahom community in Assam.

After the 18th century, the Ahom rulers adopted the Hindu method of cremation and began entombing the cremated bones and ashes in a Maidam at Charaideo.

It was the permanent settlement of the first Ahom king Chaolung Sukaphaa. According to Tai-Bailung-Mohong Buranji (a manuscript in Tai), Sukaphaa was buried in his capital city Che-Rai-Doi.

The tombs Maidam of Ahom kings and queens at Charaideo hillocks resemble the shape of the pyramids and are objects of wonder revealing the excellent architecture and skill of the sculptors and masons of Assam of the medieval days.

The mounds, which resemble grassy hillocks, are considered sacred by the Ahom community. Each Maidam marks the resting place of an Ahom ruler or dignitary and is believed to house their remains along with valuable artifacts and treasures. 




This unique burial practice involved interring the deceased’s remains in an underground chamber, with the above-ground mound serving as a memorial and symbol of respect. The Maidams are deeply rooted in Assamese identity and history, showcasing the region’s rich heritage.

The actual number of Maidam were more than 150 but only 30 Maidams are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Department of Archaeology under the Ancient Monuments and Sites Remains Act 1958, and under the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Act 1959 and the remaining Maidams are unprotected.

Architectural details ::

The maidam comprises a massive underground vault with one or more chambers having domical superstructure.

It is covered by a heap of earthen mound and externally it appears a hemispherical mound.

At the top of the mound, a small open pavilion chow-chali is provided.

An octagonal dwarf wall encloses the maidam.

The height of a maidam is typically indicative of the power and stature of the person buried inside.
