Ramsar Sites and Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

The term Ramsar was coined when the International treaty for the Conservation and Sustainable use of Wetlands was signed in the city of Iran called Ramsar in 1971 by UNESCO which came into force in 1975. February 2 is celebrated as International Wetland Day as the Ramsar Convention was signed on February 2, 1971. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands.

The 2nd of February each year is World Wetlands Day. The number of parties to the convention (COP) is 171 (as of May 2021). As of April 2022, there are 2,437 Ramsar sites around the world, protecting 254,691,993 hectares (629,357,620 acres).

Cobourg Peninsula in Australia was the first designated Ramsar site in 1974. The United Kingdom (175) has the world’s largest number of Ramsar Sites followed by Mexico. Bolivia has the largest area with 148,000 square km under the Convention protection.

The purpose of declaring Ramsar Sites under the Ramsar Convention is to stop the worldwide loss of wetlands and conserve them through wise use and management. This aim requires international cooperation, policymaking, capacity building, and technology transfer. Wetlands International or the Ramsar wetlands are selected because of their ecological, botanical, zoological, limnological, or hydrological importance.
