Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India

Hello, aspirants are you preparing for UPSC and APSC ? If yes, then you must be aware of the most important Current Affairs for the UPSC & APSC Mains exam preparation. Therefore every aspirants need to know the latest Current Affairs for the mains exam. In this regard “World_Polity” decides to provide you the most important Current Affairs 2024 that is Tata Semiconductor Plan for the development of semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystems in India. Therefore this article on Tata Semiconductor Plan will provide you the in detail discussion to write in the examination.

The semiconductor unit in Assam had been approved by the Union Cabinet in February, 2024 and will be set up with an investment of Rs. 27,000 crores.

The Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad, Assam is India’s first Indigenous Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility to Serve Global Customers.

Govt initiative to establish Semiconductor Plant major initiative in fulfilling the Narendra Modi government’s ambition to turn India into a semiconductor manufacturing hub, the Central government on 29th February, approved the proposal for setting up three semiconductor plants in India. Two of these plants will be established in Gujarat while one in Assam. The decision was taken by the Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Semiconductor ATMP (Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) unit in Assam :

The second project approved by the union cabinet is a semiconductor testing and packaging unit by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in Jagiroad in Morigaon district, Assam.

The facility will put the northeastern state on the global map. It will serve the growing global demands across key market segments like AI, industrial, and consumer electronics.

Investment: This unit will be set up with an investment of Rs.27,000 crore.

Technology: TSAT semiconductor is developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including flip chip and ISIP (Integrated System In Package) technologies.

Capacity: 48 million per day

Segments covered: Automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, mobile phones, etc.

This centre will empower youths from North East by offering them courses in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors & electronics and help them in securing jobs in the Jagiroad unit. This unit is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

Already 1,500 youth from Assam, mainly women, are undertaking training at Tata facilities in and around Bangalore. This will place them in a leadership position once the semiconductor facility becomes operational in 2025.

Why in Assam ::

The proposed facility in Jagiroad is strategically located with access to abundant water and green power – a key sustainability consideration for the Tata group and its customers globally. Assam is also closer to the current semiconductor packaging & test hubs in countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore.

Assam has technical and engineering workforce available from the entire North-East India, providing a stable talent pool for this project as well as the ecosystem development that this project will seed.

This new initiative from Tata Electronics will bring to India a portfolio of cutting-edge semiconductor technologies, advanced skill set and talent, and a network of semiconductor manufacturing suppliers and ecosystem partners, resulting in foundational development of indigenous semiconductor ecosystem in India.

This Assembly & Test facility will be able to directly ship semiconductor chips to end-users and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in India and the world.

Strategic Importance of Semiconductor Units ::

Establishment of Semiconductor Ecosystem:

The India Semiconductor Mission has achieved significant success in establishing a robust semiconductor ecosystem within a remarkably short timeframe.

These achievements mark a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards becoming a key player in the global semiconductor industry.

Development of Chip Fabrication Capabilities:

India boasts deep expertise in chip design, and with the establishment of these semiconductor units, the country is poised to develop formidable capabilities in chip fabrication. This milestone not only enhances India’s technological prowess but also positions it as a leading destination for semiconductor manufacturing.

Indigenous Development of Advanced Packaging Technologies:

By fostering homegrown expertise in advanced packaging, India strengthens its position as a trailblazer in the semiconductor landscape.
